2010 – 2012: In January 2010, Médecins du Monde realized an exploratory mission in the district of Morogoro in order to assess the incidence of child diabetes among the population. The establishment of a clinic specialized in diabetes care was considered necessary since the number of the recorded cases which were linked to the disease was already big and additionally, there was no specific provision for their care.
The clinic for early diagnosis and treatment of diabetic patients was set up as an outpatient clinic in the St. Francis Referral Hospital in Ifakara. The clinic was equipped with all the necessary medical supplies and equipment and staffed with specially trained personnel.
Within the framework of early diagnosis and prevention, MdM – Greece organized awareness campaigns and a series of educational seminars for both patients and their families in order for them to acknowledge the demands and the difficulties of living with such a disease.
The clinic operated from September 2010 until December 2012 under the coordination of the organization, and, upon conclusion of the program, it has been functioning under the administration of the hospital.
The project was funded by Novo Nordisk.
