Days later, the damages that the storm “Daniel” created are still counted and its impact over Thessaly Region is not yet discovered in its entirety. A significant part of built-up area, residencies and villages are still semi-buried by the the high water level that does not recede.
MdM-Greece field teams have visited and currently support the people of the area report extreme living conditions, especially for the elderly and homelessness. Flood victims need continuous support both in terms of health and psychosocial support. The adverse effects of floods on human health are complex and far-reaching, and identifying vulnerability is a major challenge.
MdM RESPONSE
As of Monday 25 September 2023 and during the first phase of the mission, MdM-Greece has provided services to 400 people, including elderly permanent residents and children as well as underaged of the Roma community. The team’s presence consisted of both visits to the free accommodation areas and home visits. Under the guidance and in collaboration with local authorities, the Doctors of the World team met with local leaders such as the presidents of local communities to record needs and provide supportive services such as the distribution of health and information material, personal and general hygiene materials (antiseptics, wet wipes, shampoo, masks, bleach), medical counselling services and referral and delivery services, medical advice and referral and delivery of pharmaceutical preparations on a case-bycase basis in the following areas:
