Rom-boost: Audiobook Training in Romanes

A PRECIOUS AND ACCESSIBLE TRAINING TOOL FOR ROMA COMMUNITIES

With the delivery in Romani language of “Rom-boost – Audiobook Education”, the project “Rom-boost – Educational actions in Roma communities” reached its successful completion on Tuesday 30 April. A project implemented by Médecins du Monde starting in September 2023 in the Municipalities of Athens, Spata and Pallini-Geraka with funding from EEA Grants, through the Active citizens fund program, and with fund operators the Bodossaki Foundation and SolidarityNow.

The educational presentations of the Roma community empowerment seminars conducted by Médecins du Monde in the framework of the “Rom-boost” project are freely available, through the website mdmgreece.gr, in audiobook format in Romanes language, thus offering a valuable and accessible literacy tool to Roma communities, especially to people with literacy problems in the Greek language.

Responding positively and respectfully to the challenge of preserving the customary elements and linguistic tradition of the Roma community, by using Romanes the Audiobook Education overcomes the language barriers that limit the access of these populations to educational and cultural resources, allowing the improvement of literacy rates but also empowering them to encourage them to participate more actively in the social, economic and political spheres.

TOPICS

In an understandable language, “Rom-boost – Education Audiobook” gives Roma populations the opportunity to be educated easily, with modern methods, adapted to their daily life and habits, on ten critical topics: Child Protection, Education, Human Rights, Social Inclusion, Gender Equality, CV & Interview, Cultural Identity, Personal Hygiene, Employment Orientation and Mediation. This while introducing the vital social innovation of encouraging the preservation and promotion of their language, the vehicle of their distinct cultural identity.

It is worth noting that the involvement of members of the Rom community in aspects of the production of “Rom-boost – Education Audiobook”, such as writing, narration and distribution, enhanced social cohesion and collective action, factors necessary to promote positive social change. Moreover, based on the experience of Médecins du Monde’s long-term engagement with Roma populations, active community representation is, in addition, a catalyst for empowering their voice and challenging stereotypes and discrimination, which is the only safe path to their effective inclusion and integration.
