Emergency Health Response Ukraine – Phase I, II, III, IV
Start Date 01/04/2022
End Date 30/09/2023
Donor Americares
On 24th of February 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine on several fronts, beginning a major invasion. One year on, millions of people have been left without essential services as a result of the hostilities. We are facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with the disruption of health services being among the critical concerns. Even though Ukraine’s health system has shown great resilience, the risk of a deterioration in mental and psychosocial health is growing as people continue to face traumatic events. Routine vaccination is disrupted, and people with chronic conditions are at risk as the care system has been operating with considerable shortages of health staff and supplies.
MdM-Greece is partnering with Americares since April 2022, to support its operations in Romania (April 2022 – December 2022) and Ukraine (April 2022 to present). Through the projects funded by Americares, MdM-Greece specifically aims to improve access to comprehensive health, psychosocial support and protection services for affected populations living in rural areas and to strengthen the resilience of local communities, national infrastructure and municipal services through synergies with local partners, key populations, national and international institutions.
To do so, it works on three (3) different layers of intervention:
a) supporting people affected by the conflict and people in risk at the individual level
b) strengthening community-based support networks through teamwork and
c) enhancing community resilience through awareness, capacity building and technical support to the local health and welfare systems.
Since the start of the war, Americares has provided total aid valued at more than $70 million to 74 local organizations assisting those affected by the war. Aid includes grants and shipments of medicine and medical supplies, including those delivered by volunteer Medical Outreach teams. To date, Americares has awarded over 78 emergency grants valued at $3.6 million to 53 organizations working in Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine.
